Sorry about the candor as you answer these questions: So, you missed the boat? You did not know this law was coming down the line, since 1999? Nobody sent you a letter saying you had to do this? Your employer did not tell you about this? You thought it got postponed - again - or went away entirely? Well my friend - YOU ARE NOT ALONE! The estimates of how many Electricians are working in the State of California have never been tallied. Rough estimates range from 70,000 all the way to 100,000. How many of them took and passed the test as of January 8, 2007? 30,110! How many failed the test? 12,326! How many even applied to take the test? 56,897! The DAS never knew how many electricians there were! They still don't! There could be anywhere from 15,000 - 70,000 people that did not get certified before the deadlines of January 1, 2006, and 2007. Now for some answers to some of those questions: You did not know this law was coming down the line, since 1999? Well, many didn't... The only way you knew about this law over the last 8 years are as follows:
Nobody sent you a letter saying you had to do this? Well, the DAS did not have the addresses of every Electrical Worker in the whole state - they did not send any letters... They did however send ONE letter to C-10 Electrical contractors. It looked very similar to junk mail... And, they sent it after the deadline for testing or filing to take the test for General Journeyman. Your employer did not tell you about this? Well, you didn't know about it either... If your employer did not see that letter, or it was too late for you to get tested as a General Journeyman as you do commercial work, there was not much he or she could have done. You thought it got postponed - again - or went away entirely? Well that easy to understand, this law has been postponed about a dozen times. What can you do now? Well, if you have not done so already, you need to apply as an Electrician Trainee. That's right, you now have to go back to school, and get this... If you were considered a Journeyman before, you are not anymore. You need to be supervised by a Certified Journeyman, on a one to one basis. And a Certified journeyman is only allowed to supervise one uncertified person at a time. If not, you are considered to be working illegally. I want to be able to contact you if I find out any information about your legal situation! There may be future legal cases that may involve you, if I find out there is one, I will contact you.
